After spending the previous day in Freeport and Portland, Maine, we were ready to explore Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
I loved this cute, little town!
The house below is theĀ Governor John Langdon House and was built in 1784. It was one of the first Georgian mansions in Portsmouth. John Langdon was a merchant, shipbuilder, Revolutionary War leader, signer of the United States Constitution, and three-term governor of New Hampshire.

The brick home below is the Treadwell Jenness House and was built in 1818, following the Brick Act of 1814 which required new buildings higher than 1 story to be made of brick, to prevent fires. Portsmouth had a huge fire in 1813 that burned 100 buildings and 100 barns.

Below is the Oracle house, built in 1702 and it is one of the oldest houses in New England.
It was for sale for $1,495,000.

There’s an outdoor historical museum called Strawberry Banke that had lots of restored houses and shops, period gardens, and costumed characters.
Here’s a garden we happened to walk by:

And another:

And sometimes, not planning things turn out being better than having planned out the entire day. I had heard about this open-air arts market, but I didn’t think about being there the same day it occurred!
It was a cross between a farmer’s market and craft show:

It had just opened as we got there:
Okay, just a little bit more walking before lunch!

Strawberry Banke looks so pretty!
All the houses seemed to have 2-3 stories. Space seems important. And the gardens are absolutely beautiful. They look like they needed maids and gardners. But lovely. And the craft/fresh produce market was wonderful. How lucky you were to be there on that particular day.
Hugs
Loved the large 3 story homes!!! Also loved the peach & blue home with the purple door–it actually looks tasteful.
Bet the open air market was fun too.
And the gardens were fantastic!!
hugs,
